EMILY WILDING DAVISON (1872-1913)

Emily Wilding Davison was a millitant activist who fought for Women's Suffrage in Britain. She was jailed on nine occasions and force-fed 49 times. She is best known for stepping in front of King George V's horse at the Epsom Derby on 4 June 1913, sustaining injuries that resulted in her death four days later.

Barbara's theory that she was trying to disturb the Derby in order to draw attention to her cause, by throwing her 'Women's Rights' sash over the King's horse's neck in order to petition the King is now widely accepted.  Her campaign to clear Emily's name took 16 years of research and she was vindicated in the Channel Four programme 'Secrets of a Suffragette'.

Below is a dated list of the history of Barbara's campaign trail.

Relatives from around the globe gathered for a fortnight of plays, speeches and prayers. Emily's sash was displayed to the people of Morpeth for the first time, moving many to tears as they walked past it.
